December 1913, Kharkiv province. Platon Chechel is invited as a guest to a private New Year's party. The exile accidentally finds himself in the circle of influential Kharkivites. The body of one of the guests is found immediately after the masquerade ball. The mansion is covered with snow, guests are cut off from the world.
