Austrian photographer Karl-Josef Zumbrunnen comes to Ukraine to find himself and his purpose. On his bizarre journey, he is accompanied by translator Roma Voronich, her almost adult daughter and poet husband, Professor Doctor, two strippers, and a music video director. Arriving at a very strange Carpathian hotela former weather stationthe group finds itself on the verge of a mystical otherworld. The world of the novel is a carnival of Hutsul folklore, late 1990s culture, mafia showdowns, and the high poetry of Bohdan-Ihor Antonych. Irony and humor coexist with philosophical melancholy, hope and a European Ukraine are born out of chaos, and the characters return to their lost essence via extremely dangerous paths. Twelve Hoops is a cult Carpathian novel that sparked heated debates in its time and, as it turns out, remains relevant to this day. It has been translated into English, German, French, Spanish, Polish, Slovenian, Croatian, Italian, and Norwegian.
