Jack London

Jack London, urodzony jako John Griffith Chaney, to jeden z najbardziej rozpoznawalnych amerykańskich pisarzy XX wieku. Jego powieści, zawierające liczne wątki autobiograficzne, oscylują pomiędzy przygodowym romantyzmem a naturalizmem.

Jack London i jego burzliwe życie

Życie autora „Białego Kła” było niezwykle barwne. London przyszedł na świat w 1876 roku w San Francisco jako syn Flory Wellman i H.W. Chaneya. Nazwisko, pod którym jest znany, przyjął od ojczyma. Od wczesnej młodości zarabiał na życie, podejmując się najróżniejszych prac. Był między innymi gazeciarzem, kłusownikiem, marynarzem, poszukiwaczem złota i reporterem. W czasie pracy jako korespondent wojenny relacjonował wojnę domową w Meksyku oraz konflikt rosyjsko-japoński w 1905 roku.

Jack London czerpał swoje inspiracje z idei Marksa, Darwina, Nietzschego i Spencera. W swoich poglądach łączył socjalizm z teorią walki o byt, a także uznaniem dla pełnych siły jednostek.

Po śmierci pisarza pojawiła się głoszona do dzisiaj plotka o jego samobójstwie ‒ miał świadomie przedawkować morfinę. Teza ta nie znalazła nigdy potwierdzenia w dowodach i relacji świadków. Według aktu zgonu przyczyną jego śmierci była mocznica. Przyczyn plotki upatruje się w motywie samobójstwa obecnym w powieściach Londona ‒ w jednej z nich bohater z pomocą lekarza popełnia samobójstwo, zażywając śmiertelną dawkę morfiny.

Jack London umarł młodo, w chwili śmierci miał zaledwie czterdzieści lat, jednak zostawił po sobie kilkanaście powieści. Wiele z nich na stałe weszło do kanonu literatury światowej.
